Why We Reimagined Kespry Cloud

As a product manager at Kespry, I have the privilege of listening to customer feedback and working with our incredible engineering team to bring those ideas to life. It is amazing to see how quickly some ideas can make it into our product - in the last year we have launched Drone 2 and 2s, countless software updates, and powerful new Cloud features like inventory management. As we kept building on Kespry Cloud for Aggregates and Mining, however, we found that the improvements we wanted to make did not fit well in our user experience. Last month, we launched the new Kespry Cloud to make our customers’ jobs easier and build for the future of Kespry.

The idea for the new Kespry Cloud began to take shape late last year as we started working with our first insurance customers. After weeks working side by side with our customers doing roof inspections in the field, we learned that the tools for roof inspection were very different from those needed for aggregates, mine planning, and construction. We needed better ways to inspect high-resolution photos and different kinds of reports. We also needed to rethink our navigation - while aggregates customers tend to do repeat missions on a few sites, insurance customers were more likely to only fly a “site” one time.

With all of this in mind, we realized that to give our customers a purpose-built experience we would need different versions of Kespry Cloud for our insurance customers and those in aggregates, mining, and construction. So, we set out designing not one, but two new web applications - Kespry Cloud for Insurance and Kespry Cloud for Aggregates and Mining, each tailored to fit the task at hand.

Although the initial idea for multiple Kespry Cloud versions came from our insurance customers, we also listened to the feedback of dozens of aggregates and mining users to understand where we could improve. Operators with sites spread across large regions wanted a better view of all their locations, so we created a map-based dashboard. We introduced the concept of workspaces, splitting up common tasks so that users can see as much of their site as possible without too many tools or features getting in the way. To improve consistency, we created a universal unit setting. Many users wanted an easier way to access inventory management and reporting, so they are brought to the forefront in the new Kespry Cloud for Aggregates and Mining.

The new Kespry Cloud is more than just a fresh coat of paint, though. Improved back-end systems mean faster load times across both Kespry Cloud, especially when it comes to the 3D model. These changes under the hood will also mean powerful, more advanced tools in the future. In the coming weeks we plan to launch tremendous improvements to PDF overlays, a 3D pile visualization tool, and a new workspace dedicated to earthworks and change management.

Launching the new Kespry Cloud is the culmination of a months-long effort by our incredibly talented engineering team. Just as Drone 2 and 2s have helped our customers collect more data in tougher conditions, the new Kespry Cloud will help customers do more with that data than ever before. Our customers are full of great ideas, and I am eager to hear how we can make the new Kespry Cloud even better.
